Interview #90: Kayla Bowyer

Kayla Bower

Kayla Bowyer is oodles of fun.

She speaks softly but confidently, and she's just the type of person you could spend hours with. Her bright attire and smile definitely put me in a better mood such a frigid day.

I learned Kayla is a thrift shoping fanatic and chocolate lover ... so of course we got along right away.

When I received Kayla's interview nomination, I was moved to find out she works with youth whose parents are incarcerated via Amachi Pittsburgh.

Kayla was, herself, an Amachi Pittsburgh mentee growing up while her mother was incarcerated.

I'm inspired by Kayla's work as well as her story and I'm pretty sure you will be too.

Enjoy Kayla's Q&A!

Name: Kayla Bowyer

Job title: Amachi Ambassadors Coordinator

Twitter: @PiNKLUE

Neighborhood you live in: McKeess Rocks

Coffee Shop Drink of Choice: Hot cocoa with whipped cream

Current Shampoo Preference: I actually don't use shampoo too often. Sounds crazy, I know. I cleanse my hair with conditioners like Organix and Hello Hydration. But when I do use shampoo, I rely on Habeebah's Herbals Natural Hibiscus Shampoo. It doesn't have any sulfates and smalls fantastic!

Why do you choose Pittsburgh as your home?
I was born in this great city and I choose to continue living here because this is where I built true friendships, received education, and this is where my family still remains.

Who do you spend your time with?
I spend the most time with my Grams (grandmother) and with my boyfriend. I also make an effort to have monthly get-togethers with my close friends from college. With what started as an inside joke among ourselves, we still call ourselves "The Napkin" even years later.

What are your favorite aspects of your job?
I enjoy working with teens. They're full of energy and are always up to something new and different.

Do you have a soul food?
Chocolate comforts my soul and improves my mood. I enjoy it in any form; I love it as a liquid or a solid, and if we could breathe chocolate gas, my lungs would be filled with joy.

What are some of your recent personal goals?
I've been meaning to learn how to drive lately. I'd also like to learn how to cook different types of food.

What are your favorite Pittsburgh restaurants?
I'm a fan of Hanlon's and Mallorca.

Describe your ideal day.
I'llgive you two ideal days; one ideal weekday and one ideal weekend.

AM - Getting to work on time and not forgetting to bring my lunch with me. Once I'm at work, there are no surprise assignments for me and my email inbox is not overflowing. Finishing at least
half of my tasks for the day is an accomplishment.

PM - After work I meet up with my boyfriend and stop at a quick happy hour before heading home. I fix dinner and watch something funny on TV while I check my social media. Then I can shower, climb
in bed and crochet until I get ready to snoozzze.

AM - Sleep in until 11 and watch cartoons until I finally roll out of bed and eat brunch. Visit my Grams and get my laundry done. Do some thrifting at Goodwill.

PM - When I'm back home I clean my apt while listening to music. On weekends, I stay up late watching Family Guy and eating sweets.

What is the most memorable live show you have seen in Pittsburgh?
The Lion King.

What do you think Pittsburgh will be like in ten years? What do you love most about the city?
I think that in 10 years, all of the construction and development will be completed and the architecture will be modern and beautiful, but I do worry about gentrification.

What I love most about Pittsburgh is its small town feel. Here, the six degrees of separation are more like three.
